spacer Mark has csat letters behind his name from an addiction course he went to, but he is not a formally trained or licensed counselor/therapist. This is why cannot accept insurance. His educational background comes from a degree in divinity, not psychology or counseling. He lacks understanding in basic counseling concepts such as therapeutic alliance and unconditional positive regard. At our very first session with mark, he looked me straight in the face and said "i believe your wife." I have never heard of any counselor taking sides like this. It was a redflag, but we stayed because our marriage was hurting and we were desperate. I quickly learned of mark's hammer-like approach to husbands. This is why most wives love mark, because they think he gets them. In reality, this is a form of therapeutic manipulation to be used as leverage against the husband. If you do not respond to his methods, you risk being labeled as difficult, narcissistic, blind, hopeless, etc. Sessions are often adversarial since confrontation is his primary tool. It is common for mark to use insults and belittling comments in his attempt to break the husband down, which is the therapeutic goal. You will be considered a therapeutic failure if you do not collapse on the floor of his office wallowing in tearful contrition. He literally told me this is what was holding me back. I have spoken with other men, and mark has told them the same thing.
He eventually told my wife the only way for me to be hopeless enough to overcome my denial and resistance to therapy would be for her to leave me. Who does that?! Well, she followed his recommendation and we eventually divorced after she met another man during our "therapeutic separation."
After leaving mark, i found an actual psychologist. She was appalled by mark’s approach. I learned from her a lot of my marital difficulties were rooted in complex-ptsd and attachment disorder. Turns out, the last thing i needed was a rigid, judgmental “therapist” who was quick to blame the client for lack of therapeutic response. Mark does not have the training to identify and deal with complex underlying issues. Complex-ptsd never even crossed his mind. His approach made things significantly worse for my marriage. Avoid him if you are looking for a formally trained therapist to help your marriage
