Santa Barbara is probably one of the most famous cities on the west coast of the United States. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Spaniards carried out active missionary activities in California (to strengthen their influence in this territory). For several decades, they built 21 missions at a distance of about 48 kilometers from each other. The Santa Barbara Mission was founded as the tenth in 1786. It is now the most visited operational of any California mission. The city of Santa Barbara was created around this mission.
